Sir Francis Drake was born near Plymouth in Devonshire, England in c.1542. Drake was the oldest of 11 brothers. Then he moved with his family to Kent. Sir Francis Drake grew up without having any formal education but on the bright side he had a lot of self-confidence and ambition. Drake's father was a sailor before Drake was born. That is one of the reasons how Drake learned about ships so well. Since his father probably talked about ships a lot of the time. At the begining and the end of his life he wanted to be a explorer.
